Historic Queen Anne Victorian
Status: In Progress
Location: Saint Peter, Minnesota
PLAAD principal, Matt Byers, has always had a passion for historic homes and the design potential of carefully blending modern detailing, fixtures and furniture with the historic fabric of the home. Inherent in these homes is a rich palimpsest of period detailing and materials as well as family and community lore and history. In the spring of 2015, Matt and his wife purchased an 1887 Queen Anne Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The previous owner had tastefully executed a period renovation after the Saint Peter tornado of 1998 almost destroyed the home. However, many of the interior finishes were heavy and dark. While the National Register listing constrains what can be modified on the exterior, an ongoing, room-by-room renovation is planned over the next few years to introduce a contemporary mode of living into the typically dark Victorian genre. To PLAAD principal Mark Stankey's chagrin, Matt is a huge John Denver fan. Shortly after purchasing the home, Matt was stunned to learn that John Denver and other prominent musicians from that era visited, played and stayed regularly at the home throughout the years.
