U.S. - Dakota War of 1862: Place of Remembrance

Status:  2012 Ralph Rapson Traveling Fellowship Competition

Location:  Pike Island, St. Paul

Approaching Pike Island by foot, one is immediately confronted by the surreal quality of light and the silence of the topography laid bare by persistent floodwaters.  These immediate reactions, coupled with the reality of the island’s turbulent history and sacred significance to the Mdewakanton Dakota provided the genesis for the design proposal for a Place of Remembrance.  Structures for reflection are located throughout Pike Island, connected by a series of elevated and ground-level pathways, respecting the natural cycle of the rivers while offering the myriad types of annual visitors a unique and contemplative vantage point within the woodland canopy.
