Matthew Byers, AIA

Matt is a licensed architect and educator with broad experience in residential, corporate and commercial design and has successfully designed and managed a diverse range of projects. Through his travels, studies and practice, Matt has developed a keen interest in the relationship between structure and landscape and the act of dwelling in and movement through these two realms.

Earning a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University’s School of Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Colorado College, Matt brings a unique perspective and interdisciplinary approach to the practice of design.  In fact, Matt has a passion for rocketry, and still has all of the components of the liquid propellant rocket engine he designed, built and tested as a college senior in hopes that one day, he can reassemble it in his backyard and improve upon the design.

Matt teaches architectural design studio as well as courses in furniture design and ornament at the University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture, and, with his wife, a painting and printmaking professor, led a study abroad program to Florence, Italy focusing on the art and architecture of Renaissance Italy.

Prior to helping establish PLAAD, Matt worked at a number of architectural firms in Minneapolis, including Architectural Alliance, 20 Below Studio and James Dayton Design.

Matt devotes a significant amount of time outside of the office to volunteer activities, serving as a professional mentor for the University of Minnesota’s College of Design, and having served on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Environmental Fund.

A native of Colorado, Matt has also lived in Oregon and Washington and has a passion for backcountry backpacking, hiking, camping, skiing, swimming, collecting rocks and minerals, carpentry and woodworking. Matt and his family live in Saint Peter, Minnesota.

Peter Kluzak, Assoc. AIA

Architectural Designer

Peter is a designer working towards becoming a licensed architect. At PLAAD he enjoys working on an intimate and close-knit team. It allows him to be actively engaged in projects from beginning to end and work directly with our clients.

With growing experience and interest in emerging design technologies, Peter brings a technology-minded approach to the practice. He believes the field of architecture is just beginning to fully utilize computational tools to design a better, smarter world and solve the toughest of challenges.

Prior to joining the PLAAD team he recently received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota. He has also worked for Trimble in Boulder, Colorado with the team that makes commonly used architectural software, bringing a strong ability for digital representation to the firm.

When he’s not in the office he can be found spending time with his fiancée. The two enjoy traveling and visiting significant architectural sites together. In the cold months, they take any opportunity they can to hit the ski slopes. The two were engaged last January at the peak of Big Sky Montana.
