Set within Oregon’s rolling wine country, this family retreat draws its inspiration directly from the vineyard landscape. Carefully sited so as not to interfere with grape-growing activities, the home’s compact footprint sits lightly among the vines. Its massing aligns with the long, rhythmic furrows of grapevines—an orientation that maximizes views both down the vine rows and toward the hills to the east—extending the geometry of the land into the architecture itself. Slightly raised off the ground, the house maintains a gentle presence, reinforcing its deference to the working landscape.
The program is distilled to the essentials needed for respite from daily life: sleeping, dining, and gathering. Efficiency in both space and budget guided the design, resulting in a small yet highly functional plan. Flexible public spaces expand and contract as needed, strengthened by a seamless connection between interior and exterior. A covered porch and large bifold doors extend the living areas outward, dissolving boundaries and allowing daily life to unfold in concert with the climate and terrain.
A central exterior dogtrot forms the primary organizational spine of the project—an open-air room enclosed by simple volumes that define and protect it while preserving its connection to the sky. These straightforward forms create moments of transition between inside and out, shaping an outdoor room that welcomes guests, hosts shared meals, and mediates between the more private sleeping quarters.
The material palette reflects a straightforward, utilitarian honesty. Corrugated metal siding, its vertical lines echoing the rows of vines, references the region’s agricultural vernacular. Floor-to-ceiling glazing further dissolves the threshold between interior and landscape, while the simplicity of the interiors keeps attention fixed on the surrounding beauty. The result is a dwelling that feels both rugged and refined—deeply rooted in its environment and pared down to its essential purpose of providing respite.
