ARCH CAPE RESIDENCE

Situated on the Oregon coast, this retreat for a young, active family from Portland draws on regional vernacular through both form and material — weathered cedar cladding and robust, carefully chosen finishes selected to endure the demands of the coastal environment.

The design navigates tight setbacks and height restrictions with quiet confidence, all while honoring the property's relationship to the beautiful Arch Cape coastline. Primary living spaces are lifted above street level to capture ocean views and maintain a strong connection to the backyard across the sloping site.

The great room is anchored by vaulted tongue-and-groove ceilings with articulated beam work — a warm, textured canopy that echoes the wood detailing found throughout the home, lending a sense of comfort and shelter across every season.

At the lower walk-out level, a double-height entry makes an immediate impression. A hammock net above floods the interior with natural light, visually uniting the levels while striking a tone of warmth and playfulness.

From the kitchen and dining areas, carefully framed views weave everyday family life into the ever-present backdrop of the ocean. Thoughtful massing and programmatic planning ensure privacy from neighboring properties to the east and north.

Rounding out the program are a playful backyard, dedicated recreation spaces, and a bunk room that extends the spirit of the entry hammock. This reinforces the home's commitment to family fun, rest, and togetherness.
